Rowdy is a harmful condition that Beasties can be afflicted with. The Rowdy phenomenon serves as a recurring game mechanic, and plays a significant part in the story of Beastieball.

Description

When Rowdy, Beasties take on a light red glow, with smoke and a distorting aura emanating from them. In this state, Beasties are extremely aggressive, irritable, and obsessed with playing Beastieball. They will go after and acquire Ball Shrooms, natural or artificial, by any means necessary, to the point of doing things like smashing open the ball dispensers in Geo City. While a Beastie is Rowdy, the aggressive energy they emanate turns other Beasties away and makes them not want to play with them.

According to Celia and Reese's research, the massive underground fungal network drives Beasties Rowdy as a defense mechanism. As concluded by Reese after researching the three mushroom colonies, the fungal network requires Beasties playing Beastieball and hitting Ball Shrooms around to spread its spores and proliferate. If its health declines, especially from a lack of Ball Shroom proliferation, it uses the spores that Beasties have picked up to make them Rowdy, hoping to force them to play Beastieball and further proliferate the network in an attempt to recover.

Story

The player and Reese encounter a Rowdy Illugus, Surgus, and Bongus at the three mushroom colonies at Miconia Grove, Cerise Atoll, and the Rutile Nature Preserve, respectively; Reese explains that the Rowdy phenomenon has not been studied extensively, but that it has concerningly been becoming more common in recent times. The player helps Reese calm down each of the Beasties so that he can study the fungi at each colony.

After Reese reports back to Celia with his disturbing conclusion that the underground fungal network is dying, they eventually make the connection that the network turns Beasties Rowdy as a defense mechanism, in an effort to try to help regenerate itself.

Later, in Domain Park in Geo City, Celia and the player encounter a Rowdy Wottle that has destroyed ball dispensers throughout the park, and the player helps call them down. Celia grimly states that they have never seen Rowdy Beasties commit this much public destruction, but is reluctant to tell the public out of fear that it will lead to panic or mistreatment of Beasties.

Shortly before the Crown Series begins, a Rowdy Shloom appears in front of Crown Stadium and smashes the large decorative ball off of the fountain, dragging it through the city and causing massive destruction. The player faces them and calms them down before they escape. Reese and Celia are horrified at the events and state that the Crown Series should be canceled, but the Sports King immediately dismisses their concerns. Reese passes out fliers in the lobby of Crown Stadium warning about the fungal network's decline and the effect it is having on Beasties.

In the postgame, after the Beastieball League's fall, Celia reports that Rowdy Beasties have been slowly becoming less common, declaring with hope that the fungal network may be slowly healing.

Gameplay

In matches against Rowdy Beasties, they are the only Beastie on their side of the court. However, they have several attributes that make them more powerful:

  • Their Stamina is increased to 300 (or 400 in the case of Shloom).
  • They are Noisy all the time, making it impossible to score no-touch points.
  • They can immediately use any attack without needing to Volley.
  • They have more than three Plays available to them.
  • They have a Rowdy gauge that fills with each turn, similar to the player's Combo gauge; after six turns, their next attack will damage both Beasties on the player's court.

To calm down a Rowdy Beastie, the player must score one point against them before they score three points against the player.
