Riley
Riley is a Major NPC in Beastieball. She is the player's childhood best friend, spending much time with them in the Rutile Nature Preserve. Riley supports the player on their journey with the goal of saving the preserve and the Beasties in it.
Riley’s theme is Summer Blossom.
Appearance
Riley has curly pink hair and pale freckled skin. She wears large square glasses, a black headband and sleeveless shirt, and light blue shorts. She does not wear shoes.
Personality
Riley is passionate and energetic, especially about her interests, such as Beastieball. She has some level of naïveté, being willing to play along with the Sports King’s plans for hope of saving the Preserve.
She is a big fan of competitive Beastieball, stating that her family watches the Crown Series every year. As a kid, she shows the player footage of Marlin’s championship victory, and now is a passionate fan of Valerie Stride.
Story
Prologue
The player stumbles into Riley in the Rutile Nature Preserve as a child, where she teaches them how to play Beastieball using the two remaining Beasties of Axolati, Kichik, and Bildit that the player did not choose. After their game ends, the Beasties wander back off into the preserve, and Riley asks the player if they want to watch videos with her. She shows the player footage of Marlin's victory in the championship match.
Many years later, Riley and the player are relaxing in the preserve when a loud crash startles them. They find that the League has begun construction of a stadium in the Preserve, despite it being an important habitat for many endangered Beasties. She and the player agree that something must be done about this, and she tells the player to talk to Marlin. When Marlin says that Rutile has poor standing and little influence in the League, Riley appears with the other citizens of Rutile to chastise Marlin for giving up on Beastieball. Riley suggests that the player become the new Coach of Rutile instead.
Ranked Coaches
Once the player becomes the official Ranked Coach of Rutile, Riley supports their efforts to defeat other Ranked Teams and becomes their Assistant Manager. She visits the player in their locker room after every Ranked Match victory and is persistent in trying to get the League's attention to stop construction in the preserve.
After their third Ranked victory, the player and Riley are visited by the Sports King. When Riley insists that he stop the project, the Sports King is immediately interested in the great story that the player's mission would make for this season of Beastieball. He promises to cancel the stadium if the player makes top 100 rank, competes in the Crown Series, and defeats the reigning champion, Valerie Stride. After this encounter, while Marlin doesn't trust the King, Riley says that they should simply play along with him for now, as they've managed to get the League's attention and the King's offer is the best opportunity they have to secure the preserve.
Before their fourth Ranked match, Riley informs the player that there is an additional requirement other than top 100 rank to enter the crown series: a Platinum-level sponsorship. Riley says she had gotten them an interview with Daredillo Energy, an energy drink brand, giving them the option to take it now or later.
At the interview, the player and Riley are surprised to see it features Valerie Stride, with the interviewer asking Valerie how she feels about the up-and-comer going for her title. Stride is dismissive of the player. After the interview, Riley remarks that she had slightly stepped on them, but says that she was in her right to, finishing, "We stan the Sports Queen."
Before their next Ranked match, Riley will set the player up with another interview, this time with Swish Fashion. Riley is not present for this interview, and doesn’t see it get crashed by Jack. Afterwards, Riley says she had gotten a weird call, and that apparently the sponsorship was a bust. She laments that the their team doesn’t have a name to themselves yet like the big teams do, but says that they’ll figure it out nonetheless.
After their fifth Ranked victory, the player and Riley are visited again by Valerie Stride. Stride says that she knows of the King’s plans for them. Riley asks what he’s after, and Stride responds that he wants to take her champion title away from her. She then tells the player and Riley to give up and go home now, as their plan will never work.
Afterwards, Riley calls the player, saying that as a Valerie fan, it hurt a bit to see her like that. Marlin remarks that she’s within her right to be upset, given the King messing everything up, but Riley says that once Beastie is on court, the only deciding factor is the coaches’ skill. Riley encourages the player to keep taking down other ranked coaches, and let their strength prove itself for them.
Later, Riley calls the player for a special hangout that isn’t player-initiated. She offers to hang out in the Preserve. When they meet, she talks about how she’s tired of drama with the League. She rants that it’s not fair that they aren’t allowed to both achieve their childhood dream and become champions while also saving the preserve, and that Marlin couldn’t understand this as someone who already had his time in the spotlight. She then stops, realizing she can’t seem to get out of League drama either, and says she enjoyed this talk. She also points out the lever on the cliff nearby if the player hasn’t activated it yet, before leaving.
Riley calls the player after they reach top 100 in the rankings. She says she has another Platinum sponsorship prospect, which turns out to be the Beastie Research Society. Riley, the player, and Celia are interviewed in the preserve by Natalie on behalf of the Beastieball League. All parties say they hate the idea of the new stadium project, making things awkward for Natalie. Afterwards, Celia offers a potential sponsorship for the player if they assist in their research.
A few Ranked matches later, the player receives a panicked call from Riley, who had missed their match. She says she’s going to come as soon as she can, but she doesn’t show. The player can talk to her after, and she begins to say that she’s been overwhelmed with something, before changing her tone and saying that it’s fine. She says, as her manager, that it’s her job to keep messy stuff out of your way.
Registering for the Crown Series
SPOILER WARNING This section contains endgame spoilers for Beastieball! Consider yourself warned. |
Once the player has a Platinum-level sponsorship from the BRS, Riley meets with them in Geo City to apply for the Crown Series. When there, things seem to go well, until the man handling the application notices something odd, and calls the King for help. The man points out the King’s note saying to “cancel the stadium plz” if they won. He explains that this wouldn’t be possible, as the stadium was already approved by the head coach of Rutile. Riley and the player are confused by this, and he corrects himself - former head coach of Rutile. Marlin.
He reveals that the stadium was planned and enacted with full collaboration from Marlin, and that while he had ample time to cancel the project, it’s too late now. Riley runs off hearing this. The King offers the player a lifetime supply of soda for winning instead.
After receiving an apologetic call from Marlin, the player receives a call from Riley as well. She asks the player to meet her in Rutile.
When meeting her in front of the Beastieball Center, she remarks that Marlin is gone, saying that she never wants to see him again, and lamenting that their preserve may be doomed now no matter what they do. She then pauses, before continuing. She says she also has something to tell the player, and that if she hid it for any longer she’d never forgive herself.
The player follows Riley into the Beastieball Center, but is met by Jack instead. Riley explains that as the player’s best friend, she wanted them to be the head coach of Rutile, but she couldn’t deny that it was her greatest dream as well. She tried to ignore it, but she couldn’t deny that she was still so jealous of them. So, she decided to try her hand at coaching herself. She challenged the player over and over, getting stronger along her journey just as they did. She says she’s gotten strong, even Crown Series-level, but is still missing a sponsorship. However, if she could take the player’s place, she would inherit their sponsors as the new coach of Rutile.
Jack—Riley—challenges the player for the right to represent Rutile in the Crown Series.
As they battle, Riley explains everything that’s happened: how she made the costume herself, how she said all those things that she didn’t really mean, and how she may have stolen town funds for this endeavor.
Riley takes off the mask after the battle. If the player won, Riley laments that she’ll truly never be as good as the player. It was just like when they were kids in the preserve. She concedes to the player, but then asks if they truly want to compete in the Series, or if they want to allow her.
If the player lost, Riley cries out in triumph that she’s done it, and truly proven herself. However, as the player’s friend, she still offers the player the same choice. If the player chooses to allow her to compete, she confirms again to make sure they’re certain.
If the player says they want to let her compete, she puts the helmet back on, thanking the player, swearing she won’t let them down, and proclaiming that the Mega Beasts would represent Rutile. However, as the player tries to leave, their choice doesn’t sit right with their Beasties. They’d come all this way, and want to see this journey through.
Regardless of the player choice, Riley understands, and concedes to let the player compete. If they lost, she says that she wants to make sure they’re in top shape first, and challenges them until they win. Riley then gives the player a hug, and says she’ll see them at the Crown Series.
Crown Series
Riley meets the player at Crown Stadium. She casually jokes that still somewhat wishes she was competing, before they’re interrupted by a giant crash. The player goes out to find a rowdy, extinct Beastie.
After the player subdues it, Riley points out how impressive that was, referring to the Beastie as ‘God.’ The Series then gets back on track, much to Riley’s excitement. She says the Series is the pinnacle of human and Beastie working in tandem, and that she’ll be rooting for the player.
Before their final match with Stride, Riley visits the player in the locker. She gives them an encouraging speech, saying to destroy Stride with the ‘power of friendship.’ However, Marlin interrupts, saying that doing so would play directly into the King’s hands. Celia and Reese come in as well, saying that ecological collapse is inevitable if they don’t hold the League accountable. They argue over this, with Riley loudly declaring that, frankly, if the League is doing all these things, Marlin and Celia, the people complacent in that for the longest, are the people to be held responsible, and that it’s not the player’s responsibility to clean up after them. Reese says, however, that it’s the player’s decision to make.
During the HYPE mode match, Marlin and Riley call the player. Marlin advises the player to forfeit, which the King doesn’t allow. Marlin then says that the League is moving on the Preserve at this very moment, to Riley’s shock.
After the player or Stride forfeits, the King has a meltdown, infinitely extending the HYPE meter. Even as almost every Ranked coach comes out and speaks up against the League, including Stride herself, it seems it’s not enough, until “Jack” flies in, landing on their feet. Jack gives a passionate speech about how Beastieball is, always has been, and always should be about the Beasties first and foremost, and a League that doesn’t understand that doesn’t deserve to exist. This raises HYPE to an extreme level, pushing it over the limit, and causing it to explode, ending the match.
In the locker room, the player meets with Riley, hiding away after her big speech. She says she was anxious about doing something like that, but she knew it had to be done. She gives the player one more hug, and they go home together.
Post-Crown Series
After the Crown Series, Riley can be found in the Preserve picking up litter. She says that she was assigned community service as punishment for stealing Rutile town funds, but that she doesn’t mind. She also comments that the Mega Beasts have gathered some real notoriety now, and could make a big splash next League season, if there is one anyway.
At the end of the mountain climb to the summit of the Alto Alps, the player will find Riley, in full Jack costume. Riley challenges the player to one more match, just for fun, here at the top of the world.
Hangouts
First Hangout
By spending 1 Social Battery, the player can invite Riley to hang out. Upon answering, Riley will invite them to meet her in Rutile.
When the player interacts with Riley, she takes them to her house to play Legend of Office, a favorite childhood game of hers, and plays through the first chapter with them. After this, the player will unlock her first set of favors.
Second Hangout
For her second hangout, Riley takes the player to watch a Ranked Beastieball match between the Radical Queens, ranked #1, and the Crimson Racers, ranked #3. She explains how Beastieball has been her love all her life, but now, because of the player, she has a new understanding of the stresses and pressure one would experience on the court. She says she hopes she can continue loving Beastieball, even now that it's different, and says it's all she really has.
Third Hangout
Riley offers to play more Legend of Office with the player.
Fourth Hangout
Riley calls the player first and asks if they can talk at the Preserve.
Fifth Hangout
Riley offers, finally, to complete Legend of Office with the player.
Sixth Hangout
SPOILER WARNING This section contains endgame spoilers for Beastieball! Consider yourself warned. |
After defeating Riley at the summit, she will become open for a rematch at any time, and will unlock her second set of favors.
Favors
Through the Contacts menu, you can ask Riley favors to teach to any Beastie of your team one Play in exchange for 1 Social Battery, as long as the Beastie can learn the Play either via level or friendship.
